  • ASEA-UNINET International Community Outreach Program 2020 – 2022 conducted by Airlangga University in collaboration with Diponegoro University

The International Community Outreach Program is a one-week program designed to offer participants a once-in-a-lifetime experience that allows them to explore and respond to the actual social life issues, and assist the community to overcome problems. Adapting the 1st – End Poverty and the 3rd – Good Health and Well-being – of Sustainable Development Goals, this year’s program has a theme about Stunting Prevention Acceleration. It is as part of a response to target 1.3 and 3.2 – implements nationally appropriate social protection systems and measures for all, including floors, and by 2030 achieve substantial coverage of the poor and the vulnerable; and by 2030, end preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age, with all countries aiming to reduce neonatal mortality to at least as low as 12 per 1,000 live births and under-5 mortality to at least as low as 25 per 1,000 live births.

After a successful event last year in Surabaya and Sidoarjo, the program will be held in Surabaya and Semarang by conducting a collaboration between Universitas Airlangga and Universitas Diponegoro under the ASEA-UNINET consortium in which generates this program entitled ASEA-UNINET International Community Outreach Program: Stunting Prevention Acceleration.

The aim of ASEA-UNINET International Community Outreach Program 2020: Stunting Prevention Acceleration is to bridge and optimize the role of academia, both students and researchers, in stunting prevention. The direct interaction with the community and the gathering of experts on these fields are expected to have an impact on the emerging of new ideas and collaborations that can support and accelerate the decreasing of stunting rate.

  • Online Survey on Intercultural Differences and Similarities

Students from Eastern Asia are warmly invited to participate in a brief online survey on how people from different cultural backgrounds perceive social situations in a different way. The study is conducted by Florian Nemetz, student at Paris-Lodron-University of Salzburg, Austria, within the framework of a master’s thesis in social psychology.

For any question please feel free to contact Mr. Florian Nemetz directly.

Dear ladies and gentlemen, dear fellow students,

Intercultural research is an important tool to foster mutual understanding and trust. Different disciplines and traditions of research are applied in order to study phenomena that might differ from context to context. One of those disciplines is intercultural psychology. My master thesis in psychology at the university of Salzburg, Austria revolves around how people from different cultural backgrounds perceive social situations in a different way. Knowledge about that can play an important role in preventing conflicts and in discovering improved avenues of communication. Therefore, I kindly ask you to participate in a short online-survey for my thesis, which would greatly support my progress in the understanding of intercultural differences and similarities. I would also gladly offer to assist in the conduction of studies or visits on your side. If there is anything I can help with, feel free to contact via florian.nemetz@stud.sbg.ac.at. I hope you do consider participating in the survey. Thank you very much in advance!

  • In memoriam Professor Dr. Franz Kappel, University of Graz

In memoriam Professor Dr. Franz Kappel, University of Graz

Amidst the corona virus crisis and pandemy ASEA-UNINET has suffered a heavy loss: Professor Franz Kappel, one of the most active members of the network has passed away, leaving the network community in deep sadness, but also with invaluable memories of his manifold activities.

Professor Kappel was an active member of ASEA-UNINET already in the initial phase of the network, creating links to South East Asian institutions and being a member of the interview teams selecting candidates for scholarships of the Austrian government for doctoral studies, training and research programmes. Indonesian universities, in particular Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta, became soon a main focus of his engagement as guest lecturer and host for Ph.D. candidates. These ties intensified during the years, he rented a house in Yogyakarta to spend most of his holiday time working with and for the department of mathematics of UGM. Numerous prominent staff members of this department are his former students and through these, his lectures and organizational contributions one can truly state that he has formed the department’s present shape and scientific performance. His former scholars have reached leading positions, such as professorship, head of department and dean/vice-dean, making his impact and spirit perceptible up to date.

In the course of his professional contacts with ASEA-UNINET and the colleagues in Indonesia, Professor Kappel has also established many private and familiar contacts, and thus is leaving a large community mourning for him and expressing feelings of sympathy and condolence to his family.

ASEA-UNINET will always gratefully remember the pivotal and sustainable role Professor Kappel has played in the network, and his kind personality which made cooperation with him successful and pleasant alike.

  • „Head in the Clouds: Digital Learning to Overcome School Failure“ awarded as a „Success Story“ by the EU-Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture.

From 09/2015 to 08/2018 the TU Wien (project leader: Prof. A Min Tjoa and Dipl.-Ing. Niina Novak MSc.) implemented, together with 6 partners from 5 European countries, the Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership “Head in the Clouds: Digital Learning to Overcome School Failure”.

This educational project dealt with the prevention of early school leaving, the development of basic and transversal skills and the enhancement of digital education in the context of minorities, mainly Roma. Having in mind that the prevailing educational disadvantages and exclusion of minority group members, lead to lacking integration in the labour market and exclusion from society in general, the project aimed at providing an alternative way to education for children aged 6-17 years, struggling with the formal educational system or having no access to education at all. This project has now been awarded by the EU-Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture.

For further information please see the project’s website and a documentary on Youtube.

Head in the Clouds – Digital Learning in Indonesia

To broaden this succesful story, the project was extended in 2019 to rural areas in Indonesia, being (co-) funded by ASEA-UNINET.

Prof. Inggriani Liem (ITB), Dipl.-Ing. Novak MSc. and Dr. Ekaputra (both TU Wien) developed a plan to implement a selection of the educational modules (e.g. English, EKOPOLIS, IT 101 and Programming Module) with students of different school levels in different locations in Indonesia and to furthermore introduce and train local teachers and researchers in this alternative educational approach and the use of the developed educational modules.

The project implementation in Indonesia took place in March 2019, with workshops and seminars in three different cities: Bandung, Jakarta and Balige and over 300 teachers, researchers, children and youth in attendance.
