The 16th ASEA-UNINET Plenary Meeting 2017 was held from July 17th to July 20th at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, in Graz Austria. Within these four days, 123 representatives of ASEA-UNINET member universities, guests of honour and members of the organisation team attended the meeting.
In light of the UN Sustainable Development goals for 2030 the ASEA-UNINET Plenary Meeting 2017 had a special focus on the topic of “Sustainability”. Constituting as a pre-event and for the first time ever ASEA-UNINET invited sustainability experts and specialists, across different scientific fields within the network, to participate in a Sustainability Workshop on July 15th and 16th 2017. The program aimed to foster exchange of ideas, collective analysis and matchmaking of expertise and interests to generate ideas for project collaborations within the framework of sustainability.
On the first day of the Plenary Meeting a presentation of the workshop outcomes and an invited talk by experts from Vienna University of Economics and Business stimulated consciousness and interest among the participants of the Plenary Meeting to subsequently brainstorm on potential collaborations within formed working groups on Sustainability. Invited Keynotes from the Austrian agency for international mobility and cooperation in education, science and research (OeAD) and the European Commission laid focus on Funding Schemes and corresponding European Initiatives and Programs.
The second day started with parallel presentations, campus visits and the continuation of Sustainability working groups at three locations, including Graz University of Technology, Medical University of Graz and University of Graz. Emphasis was put on the national coordinators’ reports of 13 members countries from South-East Asia and Europe. A campus tour at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz and a tour through Graz, the capital of Styria completed the program of the second day.
The third and last day provided room for presentations of nine new universities seeking ASEA-UNINET Membership from Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Italy and the Czech Republic. Finally, the elections of National Coordinators, Regional Coordinators and President for ASEA-UNINET were conducted after a short report of the Sustainability Working Groups achievements.
The ASEA-UNINET Plenary Meeting 2017 concluded with a social program on the fourth day, including a visit to the world-renowned Zotter Chocolate manufactory, a hike to the medieval Castle of Riegersburg situated on a dormant volcano and dinner at Buschenschank Bernhart.
